Studying in China-Cost of living
Cost of living.
China is really cheap compared to Western European and American cities. Food is really affordable and you can eat in a street restaurant by the school for about 2 Euros (20 Yuan). More upscale restaurants and Western restaurants are more expensive, but you rarely spend more than 15 euros for a meal (150 Yuan). In Xi'an there are many shopping centers in the city where you can find Western products and brands, which more or less cost the same as in Europe, or you can go to local markets. Particularly for clothes, it can be very convenient, and also fun to haggle about the price. One thing you need to bear in mind before leaving for China: it might not be easy to find big clothes and shoes (particularly for girls). China is also the ideal place to buy technology. There are several computer malls in Xi’an where you can find all the brands, and Chinese brands, which are normally are cheaper…and just as good.
Foreign teachers have to pay for utilities. The school will provide you with “rechargeable cards” for gas, water and electricity and will assist you with payments, just as with the internet connection at home. At the beginning of the winter, you will have to pay for heating (approximately 1000 Yuan for 4 months).
